ARTIST’S STATEMENT
In 1986, while working on my undergraduate degree at the University of California Santa Cruz, I created a bronze sculpture from a doodle I drew in 1976. I named it, Miffed! (Prominent Occlusion). I showed it at a few art shows and a juried competition. The juried show didn’t win anything but earned a write up in a 50-year history of the competition.
Last March, while displaying some abstract bronzes at a show in San Francisco, I was scrolling on my phone and saw a posting for Bitcoin 2024 in Nashville. I bought a little Bitcoin in 2017 but only started studying it properly in late 2023. I’ve been reading books and watching one podcast after another ever since. I thought it interesting how Miffed fit the TradFi narrative, but it needed to be improved to tell the story with more detail. I wanted to get that concept to Nashville.
I bought a ticket for Bitcoin 2024 that day but there wasn’t enough time to get a new bronze production run out. I decided to create a t-shirt to test market the concept among people that would understand me—Bitcoiners!
You can see the original Miffed here. The sculpture redesign will be like the shirt with an open safety pin, bomb going into the open hat, shrinking dollar symbols and more color throughout. Standing about 18” tall with a black granite base, the desktop version will have a cleaner look and all the features of the shirt.
I’ll produce it as a signed, limited edition. Cost and edition size will be determined after I make the original in wax and clay so the foundry can quote it. The work will also be scanned giving me the ability to scale it up to almost any size. Larger sizes will be done in smaller and potentially exclusive editions.
